HOSPICE SERVICES
Hospice is a special kind of care for persons who are in the
last phase of an illness which can no longer be cured. Hospice
care focuses on controlling symptoms so that the patient can be
as comfortable and active as possible. Hospice is available when
a patient no longer responds to curative treatment. It neither
hastens death nor artificially prolongs like.
The goal of care is to improve the quality of life by providing
comfort measure and support.
At Home
The Hospice staff works with the primary caregiver and family
members in the patient’s home.
Nursing Homes
The Hospice staff can enhance the level of care a patient
receives, especially in regard to symptom management, by working
with nursing home staff members.
In the Hospital
When a patient’s symptoms increase in a way that they can no
longer be cared for at home or in a nursing home, arrangements
ma be made with Newport Hospital to extend Hospice Care.
Annual Events
Members of the Hospice Team host two annual events – the service
of Remembrance and tree Lighting. Family members are invited to
each of the events to celebrate the life of their deceased
family members. The events are also a wonderful opportunity for
family members to reconnect with hospice staff and volunteers
who spent time with them. Both the Service of Remembrance and
the Annual Tree Lighting are held in November during National
Hospice and Palliative Care Month.
